Trinidad Hotels:
Tourists have only scratched the surface of Trinidad and Tobago. Outside of the festivities of Carnival, most visitors to Trinidad are on business trips. Tobago is a bit more tourism driven, enticing nature junkies and budget travelers year round, but not in numbers that could be considered staggering. All-inclusive resorts number into the hundreds on some of the Caribbean islands – here there is exactly one. Thus, Trinidad and Tobago hotels are mostly mid-size and utilitarian. The business people and travelers on the cheap do not need much in the way of spacious resorts.
Hotels in Trinidad are still of the highest standard, you just won’t see a lot of them outside the commercial areas of the island’s capital of Port of Spain. As long as it’s not Carnival, you are unlikely to have a hard time find a place to stay, even at the last minute. The low frequency of visitors means that even the Trinidad resorts situated to the east and south of the capital are a better value than resorts on most any other island. The same can be said for hotels in Trinidad. Five star Trinidad resorts such as the Mount Plaisir Estate Hotel become suddenly affordable, while quality hotels – even in Port of Spain – will be significantly kinder to you wallet than you’d expect from an island in the Caribbean.
Trinidad Hotels – More about Trinidad
Hotels in Tobago are a little different. As the island is more concerned with bringing in nature lovers, there are a number of eco-friendly Tobago hotels. But, unlike hotels in Trinidad, there are many different types of lodgings available. Anywhere from posh resorts to the cheapest hotels in the region, Tobago can conform to any budget. This is one of the many reasons tourists go out of their way to visit this southerly island. Tiny Tobago hotels offer intimate looks at island lifestyle amongst the rain forests. Immensely popular with those wishing to explore the imposing peaks and biologically complex interior of the island instead of the beaches can find cheap lodging most anywhere.
The southwestern coast is the closest thing to bustling that the island gets, and here you’ll find many of the higher class resorts and hotels in Tobago. From plantation-style to luxury 1940s style, you can find most anything within a mile of the airport safely entrenched in the corner of Tobago. Regardless, you’ll never notice the island hoppers and larger jets, even if you stay in Crown Point, right next to the airport. In fact, the closest lodging is probably the Coco Reef resort. One of the most popular resorts on Tobago, it has eye-catching pink walls and the only private beach on the island.
Hotels
There are major international chain hotels in Port of Spain, and a number of smaller hotels in the surrounding areas. In Tobago, there is a growing number of international-standard resort hotels as well as many smaller private hotels and guest houses. A 10% government room tax and VAT are levied.
Note: All types of accommodation must be booked well in advance for the Carnival.
Guest Houses
The Tourism and Industrial Development Company Ltd publishes a list of guest houses found throughout Trinidad and Tobago (see Accommodation Information below).
Self Catering
There is a growing number of apartments and houses available for rent in Tobago, ranging from the very luxurious to the plain and simple. Though many are located in the west in the main tourist part of the island around Crown Point and Shirvan Road, there are many other more secluded and unspoilt areas where there are properties of all standards to rent. About Trinidad:
Trinidad (Spanish: “Trinity”) is the larger and more populous of the two major islands and numerous landforms which make up the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. It is the southernmost island in the Caribbean and lies just 11 km (7 miles) off the northeastern coast of Venezuela. With an area of 4,768 km² (1,864 sq. mi.) it is also the fifth largest in the West Indies. Time zone: GMT -4 (Trinidad does not observe DST).
It is commonly believed that the original name for the island in the Arawaks language was “Iëre” which meant “Land of the Humming Bird”. Christopher Columbus renamed it “La Isla de la Trinidad” (“The Island of the Trinity”), fulfilling a vow he had made before setting out on his third voyage of exploration.
In the Caribbean nation of Trinidad & Tobago you’ll find more than swaying palms and sun-kissed beaches. When you visit these historic islands you’ll enjoy a multicultural feast prepared by descendants of settlers from Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and the Middle East.
Arawak and Carib Indians prospered here at the southeastern end of the Caribbean chain until 1498, when Columbus spotted the island he named for the Holy Trinity.
Nearly a century would pass before Spain established Trinidad’s first European community, San Jose de Oruna (St. Joseph) just east of the modern capital of Port of Spain. But Spain’s lack of commitment to develop the area made it easy prey for England’s Sir Walter Raleigh, who sacked the town in 1595.
No attempts were made to colonize Tobago, but in the 17th century English, French, Dutch and even Courlanders (Latvians) fought to control the strategic island, along with pirates who used it as a base for raiding other Indies outposts.
Britain gained control of Trinidad and Tobago in 1797. During the next 20 years, English overseers brought in 10,000 Africans to work sugar, cotton and indigo plantations. Descendants of those slaves today comprise the largest segment of Tobago’s population.
After Britain abolished slavery in 1830, landowners imported thousands of indentured workers from India, China and the Middle East. Their descendants have given Trinidad its multi-ethnic charm and cosmopolitan flavor.
The distinction between the islands is all the more apparent when you consider that they existed separately for centuries. Tobago at one time maintained its own legislature. But economic downturns resulting from the collapse of the sugar market in the late 19th century prompted Britain to make Tobago a governmental ward of larger Trinidad.
The joined islands gained independence in 1962 and the new nation of Trinidad and Tobago became a republic in 1976.
Although it lacks the precious metals Spain coveted, Trinidad nonetheless is rich in natural resources. Oil and natural gas production generates huge revenues and now visitors from around the world flock to the islands each year to enjoy spectacular reefs, abundant wildlife and unique patchwork of festivals celebrating a variety of religious and secular traditions.
When is the best time to visit?:
When deciding when to go on your vacation to Trinidad and Tobago, there are a few things that you will want to consider. For starters, the weather is usually of primary importance. You might also have your mind set on attending a specific festival or event, or enjoying a certain kind of activity. Of course, for some, deciding when to take Trinidad and Tobago trips might have any and everything to do with when they can get off of work. If you have the opportunity to plan your Trinidad and Tobago vacation for any time of the year, the following content covers some of the main things that will affect your decision.
Weather certainly plays a key role for many who are planning Trinidad and Tobago trips. December through May is the peak season for Trinidad and Tobago tourism, as it coincides with the country’s dry season. It also coincides with the cooler winter temperatures in the north, which means an increase in cold-weather travelers who are looking for some fun in the Caribbean sun. Because Trinidad and Tobago is found just off of the Venezuelan coast, its seasons coincide with those of South America. As such, January is the hottest month of the year, while July is the coolest. That’s not to say that it gets cold here. Average temperatures on both islands hover in the low 70s during the cooler months. During the warmer months, a daily high in the mid-to-upper 80s is to be expected. Trinidad and Tobago is located to the south of the Caribbean’s hurricane belt, which means that it is rare for hurricanes to land here in the late summer and early fall, so they are usually not something to worry about. While it does rain quite a bit during the rainy season, Trinidad and Tobago is still a divine place to visit come the more frequent downpours. You might be limited when looking to go hiking, perhaps, but there is usually enough sunshine to make for a pleasant time.
Enjoying the beaches in Trinidad and Tobago is best done during the peak season, partly because of the warmer temperatures. Along the coasts, ocean breezes tend to help cool things down a bit, so even if you are without air-conditioning in your hotel or vacation rental, you should be comfortable. Among the perks of Trinidad and Tobago tourism in the off-season are the discounted flight and hotel rates. October through December and April through June are often considered to be the shoulder seasons when it comes to Trinidad and Tobago, so they can be excellent months to find deals, not to mention avoid the crowds. If you don’t mind crowds, then planning a vacation to Trinidad and Tobago that centers around a major festival or event is something that you might want to do.
Carnival is the biggest festival in Trinidad and Tobago, and it certainly sees an influx in tourists. No other event on the Trinidad and Tobago tourism schedule can outmatch Carnival when it comes to excitement and fanfare, so it’s a great time to be in the country. You will definitely want to book your hotel room well in advance if you plan to visit during Carnival, especially if you are planning to attend the festivities in Port of Spain. The Diwali Festival, or the Festival of Lights as it is also known, is another top Trinidad and Tobago festival. While not as big as Carnival, it is also something that you would do well to include in a vacation to Trinidad and Tobago. A Hindu festival, Diwali attracts its fair share of tourists as well, and it is held in the months of October and November.
Festivals, the weather, and discount hotels and flights are just some of the things that might influence your decision when it comes to choosing the ideal time for Trinidad and Tobago trips. For those who have an open mind, any time is a good time to enjoy a Trinidad and Tobago getaway. There’s plenty of sightseeing to do regardless of the month, and the warm and friendly locals are always interesting whether it be June, November, or March. There’s always something going on in this sizzling tropical land, though it’s never hard to find somewhere to escape to when you really want to relax. Just remember to bring your bathing suit, a beach towel, a good book, a healthy appetite, and a good attitude with you to Trinidad and Tobago, and your vacation will be a rewarding one.
